App of the Week: Countdown Timer

By Dr. Shannon VanHorn, Director of Distance Learning and Faculty Development

It’s week 12 in the semester! Just six weeks left and then finals. For some of you, the semester has probably gone quickly. For others, it may seem like it’s dragging on.

Countdown Timer is actually that—a timer that countdowns the time to a big event, be it a new baby, a wedding, a birthday, a vacation, and even the end of a semester!

This app is available not only for iOS, Android, and Window users, but also as a web page you can bookmark for easy retrieval. Or you can place the URL on a website, too.

Once you go to the website or download the app, you can choose the font you wish for the title, along with the date and time down to seconds if you wish.

I suggest not putting in the place of the event.  I tried typing in Valley City and Valley City State University and it took me to a list of more than a hundred places to choose from that had the word “Valley” in it somewhere, but not “our” Valley City.

So as you are looking forward to that special day, be it graduation, the end of a job, or Christmas, the Countdown Timer will help you count down the weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds toward towards that big event!

Menu: April 3rd – April 7th

Monday: Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes & gravy and buttered corn. If you are looking for a fun lunch we have music in the cafe by the music department.

Tuesday: Bbq. pulled pork on a toasted bun, macaroni & cheese with steamed carrots.

Wednesday: Chicken noodle bowl, California blend, Baja fish taco and bacon cheeseburgers on the grill.

Thursday: Bbq. Thai chicken, chicken fried rice, steamed broccoli and chicken tortilla soup.

Friday: Easter Buffet

Savory Social Media Sweets Causing a Craze

By Morgan Nalley

Long before technology and social media the best recipes were historically secret family traditions. Some recipes could only be found in the minds of our great grandmothers, or stuffed in their dirty brown recipe boxes scribbled on scrap paper, which are nearly impossible to interpret. Now, social media has offered an outlet for cooking blogs and vlogs to be shared virally with the rest of the internet world.

Scrolling through Facebook, you always catch yourself stuck wasting three minutes watching the creation of “The Most Amazing Chocolate Cake” or “Samoa Brownies” inspired by the famous Girl Scout cookies.

Recipes are literally being placed right before our eyes, but are they being taken advantage of? Where are these recipes coming from? Do they belong to someone’s great grandma?

Let’s face it though, out of the millions of views that these recipe vlogs are getting how many viewers are saving, writing down, or actually creating their own delicious master piece? Are we missing out on spending quality time making memories in the kitchen with our grandparents because of this new craze that has hit the internet?

Next time you see one of these recipes, instead of wasting another three minutes watching the video and then just scrolling beyond it to then later forget about it, go to your grandma’s house and ask her how to make “The Most Amazing Chocolate Cake.”

How to Escape Midterm Burnout

By Courtney Bothun

It’s the middle of the semester, and we all know what that means – midterm burnout. If your classes are starting to get difficult, you’ve built up a resistance to caffeine, and your fashion standards have fallen from “gorgeous every day” to “at least I showered”, don’t worry! Here are five tips to keep you sharp through your midterm slump.

 Change Things Up

Is there a specific place you always go to study? Whether it’s a cozy chair in the library that you practically live in, or your desk in the room that you actually live in, pack up your bag and move. A change of scenery can do wonders for your ability to concentrate!

Study Smart

Try out some new studying techniques, and pay attention to what works (and what doesn’t). If you’ve never studied with flashcards before, make a set for yourself and get a friend to quiz you! If you usually read first and ask questions later, slow it down a bit and take notes as you go. Try lots of different strategies to find what works best for you.

Avoid Procrastination Triggers

Okay, don’t completely avoid them – after all, what’s the point of life without an occasional Netflix binge? But do keep track of the reasons you procrastinate and be careful to balance them properly. One episode of Stranger Things shouldn’t hurt your grades, but five in a row might. Study first, play later!

Treat Yourself

In fact, you can use those procrastination triggers to your advantage by using them as rewards for getting your work done. Assign values to study tasks, and reward yourself accordingly for finishing them. This works on two levels – first of all, it motivates you now, and second, it helps you build better lasting study habits.

Ask for Help

There is nothing wrong with asking for help if you need it! If you’re struggling to understand class material, schedule a meeting with your instructor or a tutor. If your slump is related to your mental health, teachers, parents, or mental health counselors can help you learn better coping strategies and access resources if you need them. Asking for help is always better than suffering alone.

App of the Week: Handpick

By Dr. Shannon VanHorn, Director of Distance Learning and Faculty Development

As the semester gets busy, I do not always have time to get to the grocery store. But sometimes when I come home, well, the fridge and cupboards are kind of bare. I might have three potatoes, a couple slices of cheese, and a clove of garlic, half a stick of butter, and a container of yogurt.

I could order pizza or go out to eat, but that can eat away at my budget.

Or I can use Handpick.

Handpick is an app with more than 10,000 ingredients listed. Simply click on the list the ingredients you have available, and it will search hundreds of sites for recipes that include your ingredients. Some recipes require more ingredients, but many will call for just the ingredients you listed (or less).  This app can be downloaded from the App store or from Google Play.

According to the National Resource Defense Council, we waste 50% more food than we did in 1970. This app is a wonderful way to make use of the food you currently have, save you a few dollars, and provide you inspiration to try new culinary delights!

(What did it suggest for me and my ingredients? Baked potatoes topped with a cheese sauce made from the cheese, butter, garlic, and a couple scoops of yogurt.  Hungry yet?)

App of the Week: Free Rice

By Shannon VanHorn, Director of Distance Learning and Faculty Development

Are you in to trivia?  Would you like to answer trivia questions and at the same time feed the hungry?

A few years ago, I went to a professional conference and was introduced to the website “Free Rice.”  Sponsored by the United Nations World Food Programme, this website provides players the opportunity to earn 10 grains of rice for every correct answer to trivia questions you provide at this site.

Categories of questions include English Vocabulary, Famous Quotes, Chemistry Symbols, Famous Paintings, Anatomy, Literature, a variety of languages, Flags of the World, and pre-algebra. Get an answer right, ten grains of rice are donated.  Get it wrong, you’ll get an easier question to answer, building back the supply of rice.

Most recently, the site is focusing on Syrian Refugee children.

For your IOS system or iPads, Pocket Rice does the same thing. Right now they are focusing their attention on Columbia and Sri Lanka.  You can download this through iTunes.

For all you Android users, Foodonate is an app that does that same thing, too. Their focus seems to be Haiti, as well as other impoverished nations.

So don’t just play trivia games online.  Why not help others at the same time?
